The Thor movie, which was one of the first blockbusters to be releases in Summer 2011 was an exhilarating superhero story which brought to life one of Marvel’s greatest and most beloved characters which featured high octane battle scenes and mind blowing special effects. The film starred the massive Chris Hemsworth as the Norse God himself and had a stellar cast of supporting actors in the shape of Academy Award winners Natalie Portman (who played astrophysicist Jane Foster) and Anthony Hopkins, who played Thor’s father Odin.
Thor, who was created by comic book legend Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby, made his first comic book appearance in issue number 83 of “Journey Into Mystery”, released in August 1962. Thor, based on the Norse God of the same name, has gone on to become one of Marvel’s most successful characters and was ranked by IGN as the 14th greatest Comic Book Hero of All Time.
Thor is the son of the hugely powerful God Odin. His mother is Gaea, the Earth Goddess, who Odin seduced in order to create a child who would one day replace him as the ruler of Asgard. Thor was born on Earth, in a cave in Norway and was brought back to be reared in Asgard by Odin’s wife Frigga. Thor would also have a younger brother Loki.
Thor was trained to be the greatest warrior in Asgard, however he proved extremely short tempered, a character flaw which would lead Thor into danger and trouble. When Thor was to be made Odin’s replacement as the King of Asgard, the Ice giants interrupted the ceremony. Thor led a revenge attack against the Ice Giants, against his father’s wishes and which put the whole of Asgard in danger. Seeing that his son was not ready to rule, Odin took Thor’s magical hammer, Mjolnir, and sent Thor to earth to learn to control his anger. When Thor had fully learned to control himself, he was able to use Mjolnir, which Odin had hidden on earth, again and return to Asgard. Thor would also become a member of the Avengers.
