First Look: Andrew Garfield In Full Spider-Man Costume

It's a great day to be a comic book movie fan! We're less than a day away from the premiere of director Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet adaptation, we got our first good look at Chris Evans in costume in director Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger (courtesy of EW) and now Sony has released a moody, high-resolution image of Andrew Garfield in the newly redesigned Spider-Man costume from director Marc Webb's Spider-Man franchise reboot.

What's striking about the image is just how different the new costume is from not only the comic book version of Spidey's duds, but from the movie costume worn by Tobey Maguire in director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. So far, we've identified three major differences in design elements of the new costume, and that's not even including the mask and leggings, which are not visible in the image.

First, Maguire's costume, like the comic book version, had curved webbing atop the red portions of the costume, but Garfield's costume has a more geometric pattern of webbing. Like the comic version, however, Garfield's webbing is black, whereas Maguire's costume had silver webbing.

Second, the spider emblem on the chest of Garfield's costume is different from both the comic book and Maguire emblems. Maguire's spider emblem, though stylized, still pretty much maintained the shape and size of the comic book version, but the bottom legs on Garfield's web emblem extend all of the way down the front of the costume to his waist.

Finally, the red portions on the arms and gloves of Garfield's costume are different from both the comic book version and Maguire's version in that they don't appear to be connected. While it's possible that the red band connecting the chest and shoulders to the gloves is included in Garfield's costume, just smaller or more toward the back, the gloves themselves are also different, with bands of blue intersecting the red at the top of the gloves and around the thumbs.

While some fans have already expressed their disapproval of the creative license taken with the iconic Spider-Man costume, 65% of the fans approve of the new costume, according to an online poll set up at ComicBookMovie What do you think? Sound off in the comments section below!.

Yesterday we got our first look at the Spider-Man costume that Andrew Garfield will be sporting when the superhero returns to theaters in 2012. And while the iconic red-and-blue costume has changed over the years in the comic book universe, it's also undergone some changes in the movie world, too.

From the time Tobey Maguire slipped on the spandex in 2002 to yesterday's reveal of the new costume, the friendly neighborhood webslinger has changed his look with every big-screen iteration.
